On July 14, 1992, Data General announced several AViiON servers that
exceed previously attained performance levels at both ends of DG's
RISC based product spectrum. At the high end DG introduced the AV
6280 and the AV 8000-8, both incorporate 8-way symmetric
multiprocessing. At the low end, the single processor A4605 and dual
processor AV 4625 rolled out as replacement for the AV 4600 series.
The AV 6280 is a 235 MIPS, rackmount system that features eight
Motorola 88100 RISC processors configured in pairs on four system
boards. A two-level cache design is used to enhance performance.
Each CPU is supported by a 128-KB instruction/data cache. In addition
a secondary 1-MB cache is provided per CPU pair, bringing total
system cache to 5 MB. The AV 6280 is designed with dual memory
buses to double memory bandwidth. System memory ranges from 128-
MB to 768 MB, and the maximum disk storage capacity reaches 320
GB when configured with the new HADA II subsystem. A single
cabinet provides room for two 20 GB disk arrays and a 20 slot VME
chassis, 11 of which are available for expansion. According to DG
the AV 6280 is projected to exceed 300 TPC-B.
The AV 8000-8 is a packaged system consisting of an 8 processor
6280 CPU and an HADA subsystem. The systems may also be
configured with an uninterruptable power supply. The AV 6280 and
AV 8000-8 run under DG/UX 5.4.2.
The single processor AV 4605 and dual processor 4625 are mid-range
servers offering 39 MIPS and 78 MIPS, respectively. The systems
are based on the 33 MHz 88100 Motorola RISC processor and feature
96-KB instruction/data cache, 32 MB of memory (upgradable to 128
MB), and up to 1.7 GB of internal disk storage, SCSI and Ethernet
interfaces, and a 2-slot VME bus. The AV 4605 series is the first
deskside AViiON system to offer a RAID based disk subsystem. Up to
40 GB are supported. The 96-KB cache of the AV 4605 and AV 4625 is
the primary difference from the earlier AV 4600 series. The AV
4625 achieved a TPC-B rating of 100.85 at a cost of $1,588 per tps.
The AV 6280 and AV 8000-8 will be available in the fourth quarter
of calendar year 1992. The AV 4605 series is available
immediately, with prices starting at 19,995 for a single processor,
32 MB of memory, a 520 MB hard drive an a 525 MB cartridge QIC
tape. All AViiON systems come with a 90-day warranty.
Data General also announced the H.A.D.A. II disk subsystems. In its
base configuration the H.A.D.A. II is packaged with five 500 MB or
1 GB 3.5" SCSI-2 Winchester disk drives. The H.A.D.A. II can provide
2.5 GB to 20 GB of data storage and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3,
and 5. It is available in August with prices starting at $35,000.
